What is the difference between SnapVault and iCloud+?

iCloud+ is Apple's storage subscription. It extends the 5 GB every Apple ID gets for free to 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB or 12 TB, billed monthly only in the United States, and it stores iCloud Photos originals at full resolution with Optimize iPhone Storage keeping small versions on the device. SnapVault is an iOS app that copies the same camera roll to an S3-compatible bucket you rent yourself from Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, AWS S3 or Wasabi. You buy the app once, at the price shown in your local App Store, and the provider bills per gigabyte-month, around $0.007 on B2 and $0.015 on R2 as of August 2026. Apple holds the keys to iCloud unless Advanced Data Protection is on; with SnapVault the files never leave the path between your phone and your own account. iCloud+ is the more convenient choice; SnapVault is the one you own outright.

For a 200 GB library, iCloud+ costs $2.99 x 12 = $35.88 per year and $179.40 over five years, because Apple does not offer an annual discount in the US. SnapVault with Backblaze B2 costs (200 - 10 free) x $0.00695 = $1.32 per month, $79.23 in storage over 60 months, plus the one-time app purchase priced in your local App Store. With Cloudflare R2 the same library is $2.85 per month, $171.00 in storage over five years, plus the app, so R2 lands slightly above iCloud+ while B2 lands well below it. At 2 TB the picture flips: iCloud+ is $9.99 x 60 = $599.40, while SnapVault on B2 is $829.83 of storage plus the app, and R2 is $1,791.00. Method: year 1 is twelve months on the cheapest billing option the vendor offers; five years is year 1 times five with no price changes. Bucket totals use decimal gigabytes, subtract each provider's always-free allowance, and exclude the one-time app purchase, which is priced per country in the App Store. Who should pick iCloud+?

• You want zero setup: iCloud Photos is on by default, syncs across iPhone, iPad and Mac, and restores a new phone in one step.
• Your library is 2 TB or more, where the $9.99 tier is cheaper than any per-GB bucket except at very large discounts.
• You use Family Sharing, iCloud Drive, device backups, Hide My Email or HomeKit Secure Video, which all ride on the same plan.
• You want a polished photo viewer, shared albums and Memories, not just a backup.

Who should pick SnapVault?

• Your library is in the 100 GB to 1 TB range, where a per-GB bucket undercuts every subscription tier.
• You want the files in an account you control, in standard formats, reachable from any S3 tool.
• You already run AWS, Cloudflare, Backblaze, Wasabi or a MinIO box and want the phone to write into it.
• You prefer paying once for software and paying wholesale for storage instead of a bundle.
• You are happy to keep iCloud Photos for sync and convenience, and want a second, independent copy that Apple cannot switch off.

Trade-offs to know: SnapVault needs a bucket and access keys before the first backup (a few minutes at Cloudflare R2 or Backblaze B2), it has no web gallery or sharing, and it runs on iOS only today with Android coming soon.

How do I move my photos from iCloud to my own bucket?

1. Make sure the originals are on the phone. With Optimize iPhone Storage on, iOS fetches full-resolution files from iCloud as each one is requested, which slows the first backup. Settings > Photos > Download and Keep Originals is faster if you have the space.
2. Install SnapVault from the App Store, create a bucket at Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, AWS S3 or Wasabi, and paste the endpoint, bucket name and access keys into the app.
3. Run the first backup on Wi-Fi while charging. SnapVault skips files already in the bucket, so you can stop and resume safely.
4. Check the object count in your provider's console against the photo count on the phone before you downgrade or cancel the old plan.
5. Keep iCloud Photos on for sync if you like it, or downgrade the plan in Settings > your name > iCloud > Manage Storage. Apple also offers a full export through privacy.apple.com if you want a local copy.
